Hand-finished horse bits – the craftsmanship behind ByLynga

A horse bit may look simple, but the journey from raw material to finished product includes many stages where experience, precision and knowledge of materials matter. ByLynga works with several specialised suppliers in Pakistan. A number of them are family businesses where skills in metalwork and bit making have been passed down through generations.

We deliberately use phrases such as made with a significant element of craftsmanship and hand-worked or hand-finished. This is more accurate than claiming that every stage of every model is completed entirely by hand. Tools, machinery and manual work are combined, and the process varies between materials and constructions.

Why Pakistan?

Pakistan has a long tradition of metalworking and equestrian manufacturing. The workshops producing for ByLynga have developed practical expertise in shaping, joining, grinding and polishing. In family businesses, generations often work alongside one another.

For us, the partnership is about combining skilled workmanship with clear product specifications, checks and ongoing communication.

From construction to finished bit

Depending on the design and material, production may include:

  • shaping mouthpieces and cheekpieces;
  • joining, welding or assembling components;
  • working joints and moving parts;
  • smoothing transitions and edges;
  • polishing and surface finishing;
  • checking dimensions, symmetry and movement;
  • final cleaning and visual inspection.

A jointed mouthpiece has different requirements from a straight bar. Full cheek, Baucher, Pelham and Weymouth designs also use different cheekpieces, attachment points and leverage. Tolerances and finishing therefore need to be assessed for each construction.

Handwork does not mean every piece looks identical

Where components are manually shaped, ground or finished, small cosmetic differences may occur in polishing, transitions or colour tone. These variations must not affect function, size or safety.

Craftsmanship is not an excuse for sharp edges, damaged surfaces, incorrect joint movement or inaccurate dimensions. Functional defects must always be taken seriously.

What is checked?

Relevant checks include mouthpiece width and thickness, cheekpiece symmetry, intended movement of joints, even welds and transitions, and smooth surfaces wherever the bit may touch the horse. Materials also behave differently. Sweet iron changes colour and develops its characteristic surface oxidation, while titanium, stainless steel, rubber and leather require different checks and care.

The people behind the products

Every delivery represents people with practical skills. We want to describe their work factually and respectfully rather than using anonymous makers merely as part of a brand story. When approved workshop photographs and further documentation become available, we will add more concrete examples to this article.

ByLynga’s responsibility

Working with experienced manufacturers does not remove our responsibility. ByLynga is responsible for what we order, the requirements we set, how deviations are followed up and how clearly products are described to customers. Our aim is to offer thoughtfully made horse bits with good function at a fair price.

Fit remains essential

A hand-finished bit is not automatically mild. Mouthpiece, thickness, cheekpieces, size, bridle adjustment and the rider’s hand determine how it works for an individual horse. Inspect the bit regularly and replace it if you find damage or unusual wear.

Frequently asked questions

Are all ByLynga bits entirely handmade?

No, not in the sense that every step is performed without machinery. Production combines tools, machines and manual craft stages, with the balance varying between models.

Are all bits made in one factory?

No. ByLynga works with several specialised suppliers in Pakistan.

Do small cosmetic differences affect performance?

Normally not. Minor visual variations may result from hand-finishing, but function, dimensions and safety must meet requirements.
