Horse Bit Materials Guide
The material of a horse bit affects its weight, taste, temperature and feel in the mouth. Use this guide to compare ByLynga’s most common materials and their care requirements.
Titanium
Titanium is lightweight, strong and hypoallergenic. It can suit sensitive horses that dislike a metallic taste or a heavier bit.
- Medical-grade titanium with a neutral taste
- Very light, supporting quick and clear communication
- Adapts quickly to the temperature of the horse’s mouth
Care: Rinse with lukewarm water and clean with a soft sponge after use.
Golden Copper
Golden Copper is a copper-rich alloy with a warm golden colour. It is designed to combine comfort, taste and a refined finish.
- Encourages salivation and acceptance
- Nickel-free and suitable for many sensitive mouths
- Retains its golden appearance over time
Care: Rinse with lukewarm water and clean with a soft sponge after use.
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture and saliva. This creates a characteristic surface and taste that can encourage salivation.
- Promotes salivation and a softer contact
- Develops a natural patina over time
- The colour change is expected and does not reduce function
Care: Rinse after use and dry thoroughly. A light surface patina is normal.
Leather
Leather mouthpieces adapt gradually to the horse’s mouth and provide a soft feel without direct metal contact.
- Made from vegetable-tanned leather
- Soft and flexible
- Can suit horses that dislike metal mouthpieces
Care: Clean gently with lukewarm water and a soft sponge. Apply paraffin oil when needed.
Important: Leather bits are not suitable for horses that chew heavily. Chewing damage is not covered by the warranty.
Rubber
Rubber provides a softer surface and can encourage active chewing. It is often considered for young or sensitive horses.
- Soft feel in the mouth
- Flexible and comfortable
- Suitable for training and everyday riding when correctly fitted
Care: Rinse with lukewarm water and clean with a soft sponge after use. Check regularly for wear or damage.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a durable, hygienic material with a neutral taste and consistent feel.
- Rust-resistant and easy to clean
- Neutral taste
- Strong and long-lasting
Care: Rinse with lukewarm water and clean with a soft sponge after use.
Material is only one part of choosing a bit. Mouthpiece shape, thickness, cheekpiece, size and the rider’s hands also affect how it works.
