Choosing and fitting a horse bit
Which horse bit is the mildest?
No bit is always the mildest. Thickness, shape, joints, material, cheekpiece, fit and the rider’s hands work together.
Which bit may suit a sensitive tongue?
First check dental health, available tongue room, thickness and fit. A thinner mouthpiece is not automatically softer. Read our sensitive tongue guide.
What is the difference between single- and double-jointed bits?
They form and distribute contact differently. The length and shape of each section also matter. See single- or double-jointed bits.
How does a straight horse bit work?
A straight mouthpiece has no central joint. Flexible straight bits and rigid bars are not equivalent. Read about straight horse bits.
What is Mini Fullcheek?
Mini Fullcheek is the shared model name for a Fullcheek design with shorter cheeks. It offers stability and lateral guidance; measurements and fit must still be checked.
Are ByLynga bits permitted in Irish competitions?
Permission depends on discipline, class, horse or pony and the complete equipment combination. Use our Irish competition-rules hub, then check the current Horse Sport Ireland or FEI rules.

What materials are your bits made from?
Our bits are made from high-quality Sweet Iron with carefully finished mouthpieces.
Why does Sweet Iron change colour?
Sweet Iron develops a light rust patina over time.
This is normal and helps stimulate salivation in the horse.
How do I choose the correct size?
We recommend measuring your horse’s current bit size.
If you are unsure, we are happy to assist you.
Are the bits suitable for sensitive horses?
Yes, our models are designed to be particularly horse-friendly, stable and functional.
Returns & withdrawal
How can I return an item?

You have a statutory 14-day right of withdrawal and a voluntary 30-day return period.
Who pays the return costs?
Return shipping costs are borne by the customer.
When will I receive my refund?
Usually within 5–10 business days after we have received and inspected the item.

Rinse the bit with water after each use and dry it thoroughly.

Which bit should I choose for a young horse?
Prioritise the correct size, a simple construction, stable contact and gradual familiarisation. No single model suits every young horse.
My horse becomes strong in the contact – do I need a stronger bit?
Not necessarily. Strong contact may relate to balance, training, pain, dental health, fit or unclear aids. Investigate the cause before increasing leverage.
How should a horse bit fit?
The bit should sit centred and stable without pinching the corners of the mouth or protruding unnecessarily. The appropriate width also depends on the cheekpiece.
What happens if the bit is too large?
A bit that is too wide may move excessively, give less precise signals and, with loose rings, increase the risk of pinching.
What happens if the bit is too small?
A bit that is too narrow may press the cheekpieces against the corners of the mouth and cause discomfort or rubbing. Stop using it if sores appear.
How thick should a horse bit be?
Thicker is not always milder because the horse’s mouth has limited space. Thickness must suit the tongue, palate and bars of the mouth.
What should I do if my horse is between two sizes?
Do not automatically choose the larger size. Fixed and loose cheekpieces may require different allowances, so assess the specific model and its fit.
What is the difference between fixed and loose rings?
Loose rings allow more movement between the ring and mouthpiece. Fixed rings sit more steadily and provide more lateral support.
How does a Baucher bit work?
A Baucher has a separate upper ring for the bridle cheekpiece, creating a stable suspension. Its overall action still depends on the mouthpiece, fit and rein use.
What is the difference between Pelham, Kimblewick and Beval bits?
They can alter rein action through their cheekpieces, but differ in construction, leverage, rein attachment and possible use of a curb chain. They are not the same type of bit.
What are the characteristics of titanium bits?
Titanium is lightweight and feels different from heavier metals. The material alone does not determine how mild a bit will be.
How should I clean a horse bit?
Remove saliva and feed residue after use and follow the care instructions for the specific material. Check joints, surfaces and any straps regularly.
Can I try the bit in my horse’s mouth and return it?
Use in a horse’s mouth may leave signs of use or hygiene-related marks and may reduce the product’s value. This does not automatically remove statutory cancellation rights. Contact us before use if unsure.

Eligibility may depend on the discipline, class, horse or pony category and combination with other equipment. Current official rules always take precedence.
Which bit sizes does ByLynga offer in Ireland?
