Signs a horse bit does not fit

A fitting problem may relate to width, height, mouthpiece, cheekpiece, bridle adjustment or oral health. One behaviour does not prove the cause, but repeated signals deserve investigation.

Signals to check

• rubbing, pinching or sores at the lips or bars
• unusual mouth opening, chewing or tongue activity
• tongue over the bit or outside the mouth
• uneven contact, head tossing or reluctance to be bridled
• cheeks pulled into the mouth or pressing hard against the face

A useful checking order

1. Inspect the mouth and teeth; stop if there is pain or injury.
2. Measure width and check appropriate clearance for the cheekpiece.
3. Review height—lip wrinkles are not a universal rule.
4. Check noseband, cheek straps and any curb chain.
5. Assess mouthpiece thickness and shape against the available space.
6. Change one variable at a time and record the result.
