Pelham bit – action, reins, curb chain and history
A Pelham combines the more direct rein attachment of a snaffle with the shanks and curb chain of a curb bit. It is traditionally ridden with two reins, allowing the rider to separate the direct and leverage actions, or with roundings joining the rein rings. This versatility also demands correct fitting and an educated, steady hand.
A Pelham is not automatically severe. Mouthpiece, thickness, shank proportions, curb-chain adjustment, rein attachment, fit and rider input determine its overall action.
How is a Pelham constructed?
Each cheek has an upper purchase for the bridle cheekpiece, a ring close to the mouthpiece for the snaffle rein and a lower ring for the curb rein. A curb chain or model-specific strap lies in the chin groove and limits rotation.
It combines in one mouthpiece functions that a double bridle divides between a bradoon and curb. This may suit a horse with limited room in its mouth, although the two actions cannot be separated as completely as they can with two individual bits.
How does a Pelham bit work?
The upper rein acts closer to the mouthpiece and more directly. The lower rein rotates the shanks and creates leverage until the curb chain contacts the chin groove. The bridle cheekpieces can simultaneously transfer force towards the poll.
A longer lower shank may provide greater mechanical advantage, but length alone does not define severity. The ratio between purchase and lower shank, when the chain engages, the mouthpiece and the rider’s timing all affect force and response. A shorter shank is therefore not automatically mild.
Using a Pelham with two reins
The snaffle rein is attached near the mouthpiece and used as the primary contact. The curb rein is attached to the lower ring and brought into play when the rider deliberately wants more leverage. Two reins offer the clearest separation but require the rider to adjust them independently without maintaining accidental curb contact.
One rein with roundings
Pelham roundings join the upper and lower rein rings so one rein acts on both. They simplify handling but reduce the rider’s ability to choose independently between direct and curb action. Their length and attachment affect the balance, and competition rules may restrict roundings even where a Pelham itself is permitted.
The curb chain
The chain limits rotation and forms part of the fulcrum for the leverage action. Its links should lie flat and symmetrically in the chin groove. An over-tight chain engages very early; an excessively loose one allows substantial rotation before acting. The commonly quoted angle of about 45 degrees is a starting reference, not a universal rule.
Check the setting with light rein contact. Inspect hooks, chain and any lip strap before every use. A chain guard may alter pressure distribution but cannot correct poor adjustment.
How should a Pelham bit fit?
The mouthpiece should remain centred and at equal height on both sides. Rings and shanks must not pinch the lips or rub the face. An overly wide Pelham can slide sideways and destabilise the cheeks; one that is too narrow can press the corners of the mouth. Check fit both at rest and with gentle contact.
What is a Baby Pelham?
Baby Pelham usually describes a more compact model with shorter shanks, but the term does not define one standard geometry. Two Baby Pelhams can have different proportions and actions. “Baby” does not automatically mean mild or suitable only for ponies.
Straight, single-jointed or double-jointed?
Pelham describes the cheek design. The mouthpiece determines much of the pressure distribution. An unjointed mouthpiece moves more as a single unit, while jointed designs allow different movement between the sides. Thickness, centre piece, tongue room, bars, palate and teeth must be considered together. No option is inherently the mildest for every horse.
Is a Pelham suitable for a strong horse?
It can give a clearer, mechanically amplified signal, but it cannot solve pain, dental problems, fear, speed, poor balance, saddle fit or training. If a horse suddenly becomes strong or changes its contact, investigate the cause. Change one factor at a time and assess steering, swallowing, rhythm, contact and discomfort over several quiet rides.
Pelham, Kimblewick or double bridle?
A Kimblewick is more compact and normally uses one rein per side. A Pelham provides separate rings for two reins but may be used with roundings. A double bridle uses two separate bits, offers greater separation of bradoon and curb actions, and requires more room in the mouth and more advanced rein handling.

History of the Pelham bit
The Pelham is strongly associated with British hunting, riding and traditional showing. It developed as a practical way of combining aspects of snaffle and curb action in a single mouthpiece, and has sometimes been called “the poor man’s double bridle”.
That phrase describes its perceived function; it does not establish a documented inventor or exact date. The available historical record is not clear enough to attribute the Pelham confidently to one person. It is more accurate to describe a British bit tradition than a proven individual invention.
Competition rules in Ireland
Pelhams are not legal in every discipline or class. Rules may distinguish mouthpieces, shank lengths, curb chains, roundings, rein numbers, horses and ponies. Always check the latest official rules issued by the relevant federation before competing.
