Horse mouth anatomy and choosing a bit

The tongue, bars, palate, lips, teeth and jaw width determine how much room is available for a bit.

Thicker is not automatically kinder in a small mouth. A port can create tongue room but redirect pressure. Measure width and assess mouthpiece, cheekpiece and bridle together.

If the horse is comfortable and safe, several short sessions provide better evidence than one trial. Stop immediately if pain or injury appears.
